Rural Counties
Urban Counties
The 2016 U.S. Census Bureau survey indicates that rural areas cover 97% of the nation’s land area but contain only 19.3% of the population (about 60 million people). Pennsylvania has the third largest rural population in the nation. Over 12 million residents live in the State, and almost one third of that population (3.4 million residents), live in areas designated as rural. According to the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, 48 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties are considered to be rural as seen on the map above. The Rural Health Information Hub provides very detailed information on the definitions of rural and their uses.
